Africa Day

What is Africa Day?

Overview

Africa Day, formerly known as ‘African Liberation Day’ or ‘African Freedom Day’ is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on May 25, 1963. It is celebrated by various countries in the African continent, as well as around the world.

Africa Day is celebrated in recognition of African nations gaining independence from western powers that had ruled many of them for decades. There was a need to articulate the aspirations of African people, marking the onward progress of the liberation movement, and acknowledging the determination of the people of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation, hence the observance of Africa Day once a year.

Africa Day Las Vegas

Africa Day Las Vegas is a family-friendly event curated by the African Diaspora in Las Vegas for all living in Las Vegas and beyond.

Vendors, food, culture, DJs/music, drums, dancing, face painting, storytelling, and an amazing Kidz Korner are all part of the day’s festivities!

Taste and experience a variety of authentic African and African-influenced dishes and beverages. Listen and dance to the sounds of Africa. Visit artisans at their booths as they display and sell their crafts.

This year we invite you to explore our resources area and glean information from African embassies, consulates, and business stakeholders.

Network with fellow diasporans for possible trade and investment opportunities and forge new relationships.

We celebrate...

  • To promote, support, and showcase African communities in Las Vegas; and to tell colorful stories from the African content.

  • To connect with fellow diasporans, to unite, to break bread, and to share our diverse cultures.

  • To create meaningful local and national partnerships with organizations that support immigrant communities of African descent that live, work, and contribute to the economies of the countries they live in.

  • To raise funds to support scholarship programs for immigrant children, health and wellness programs, financial literacy workshops, small business programs, etc.
